Modern Slavery Policy

The Modern Slavery Act 2015 came into force in the United Kingdom in October 2015. It consolidates slavery and trafficking offences, introduces tougher penalties and gives law enforcement agencies enhanced powers to pursue those engaged in human trafficking, slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour. It also introduces measures to protect victims.

Burleigh 1851 Limited has a zero tolerance to slavery and human trafficking. We are committed to acting ethically and with integrity in all our business relationships, and to ensuring that modern slavery is not taking place anywhere in our own business or supply chain.

These principles apply to our direct employees and to our suppliers, sub-contractors and business partners.

Burleigh 1851 Limited:

–  prohibits any indirect benefiting from or contribution to modern slavery;

–  will not knowingly benefit from forced or involuntary labour of any kind. All work at our business is voluntary, and workers are free to terminate their employment having completed the agreed notice period, without penalty;

–  will not knowingly work with any supplier, subcontractor or service provider that charges workers recruitment fees, directly or indirectly;

–  will not knowingly work with suppliers who retain workers' identity documents, passports, work permits or travel documents;

–  will not knowingly work with suppliers who require workers to lodge deposits or bonds;

–  will not knowingly work with suppliers who do not provide written contracts of employment detailing employee rights, responsibilities, working hours and salary;

–  does not condone the use of harsh or inhumane treatment in any part of our supply chain. Disciplinary policies must be clearly defined, communicated and shall not include corporal punishment, physical coercion or verbal abuse; and

–  promotes equality in the workplace regardless of nationality or legal status. All suppliers must ensure workers are paid at least the minimum wage required by applicable law and are not required to work beyond legally permitted hours.

The majority of our products are made at our own factory in Middleport Pottery, Stoke-on-Trent, where we employ our workforce directly. Our supply chain for raw materials draws primarily on long-established UK-based suppliers. We believe this significantly reduces the risk of modern slavery in our direct operations and immediate supply chain.

All suppliers, sub-contractors and service providers are required to adopt labour policies consistent with those set out in this policy. Burleigh 1851 Limited reserves the right to request compliance information and to carry out audits at any time having given reasonable notice. Failure to comply with corrective actions within a reasonable timeframe may result in the cancellation of orders and termination of contracts.
