Makers & Making
Burleigh pottery is decorated using underglaze tissue transfer printing, a technique perfected over 200 years ago. It gives each piece depth of colour, enduring durability and its own individual character. Engraved copper plates are used to print patterns onto fine tissue paper, which skilled transferrers apply by hand to unglazed pottery. Each piece is carefully rubbed, then washed to remove the paper, before glazing preserves the richness and detail of the pattern. At Middleport Pottery, Burleigh continues this rare craft, keeping the art of tissue transfer printing alive.
