Made by Hand - Photographed by Edward Rollitt
Burleigh is made through touch, judgement and an intimacy with material learned over time. A maker knows when clay is ready by its surface and weight, and when an edge is true by the movement of the hand. These decisions are quiet, exact and repeated until they become instinct.
At the heart of Burleigh is the rare skill of tissue transfer. A tissue artisan reads a flat pattern and understands how it will live on a curved form. The tissue is cut, placed and joined by eye, then gently worked into the surface. Pressure gives depth to the colour; the meeting of each section gives the pattern its rhythm.
Every piece carries these small decisions. Variations in colour and placement belong to its making. They are the presence of the maker, and the particular beauty of an object made by hand.
